When to Replace Your Water Filter

Every 6 Months or 200 Gallons

Most refrigerator water filters are designed to last approximately 6 months or filter up to 200 gallons of water — whichever comes first.

When Your Fridge Displays a Filter Alert

Modern LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire refrigerators have built-in filter indicators that notify you when it's time for a replacement.

Changes in Taste, Odor, or Flow

A drop in water pressure, an unusual taste, or an off smell from your dispenser are clear signs your filter is overdue for a change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which water filter and air filter does LG LMXS28596S use?
A: The LG LMXS28596S refrigerator uses the LT1000P water filter and LT120F air filter. This combo ensures clean drinking water and fresh air inside the fridge.

Q. How often should I replace the LG LMXS28596S filters?
A: Replace both filters every 6 months, or sooner if you notice bad taste, odor, or slow water flow.

Q. How do I know if my filter needs replacing?
A: Common signs include bad taste or smell, slow water flow, cloudy ice, filter indicator light being on.

Q. What contaminants does the LT1000P water filter remove?
A: The LT1000P filter helps reduce chlorine taste and odor, lead, sediment, and common water impurities. Learn more about what contaminants are removed.

Q. Does the LG LMXS28596S air filter really remove fridge odors?
A: Yes. The LT120F air filter uses activated carbon to help absorb and reduce food odors, keeping your fridge smelling fresh.

Q. Is this air and water filter combo easy to install?
A: Yes. Both filters are designed for tool-free installation. Simply twist in the water filter and insert the air filter into its compartment. Follow our air filter replacement guide for help with the air filter.

Q. Do I need to flush the filter after installation?
A: Yes. Run water for 2–3 minutes after installing the new filter to remove air and carbon particles.

Q. Why does my fridge water taste bad even with a new filter?
A: This usually happens when the filter is old or clogged. Replacing it with a new filter restores proper taste and flow. See our filter troubleshooting tips if the problem continues.

Q. What happens if I don’t change my LMXS28596S fridge filter?
A: If you don’t replace your fridge filter on time, water quality can drop. You may notice a bad taste, strange smell, or slower water flow. Over time, the filter can become clogged and stop working properly. This means it may no longer reduce chlorine, sediment, or other impurities effectively. In some cases, it can even release trapped particles back into the water. Replacing the filter every 6 months helps keep your water clean, fresh, and safe.
