The Kenmore Elite 9918 CleanFlow refrigerator air filter (46-9918) employs advanced active forced-air technology to neutralize persistent odors and preserve food freshness more effectively than standard baking soda. Specifically designed for Kenmore and Kenmore Elite French Door and Side-by-Side refrigerators, this filter is positioned in the airflow path of the appliance's built-in fan, ensuring continuous air purification within the fresh food compartment.

Kenmore refrigerator air filter 9918 contains a high-density, porous, activated carbon block that functions as a molecular sponge, capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors from items such as onions, garlic, fish, and overripe produce. By removing these scent molecules, the filter prevents odor transfer to other foods, thereby maintaining the quality of stored items such as ice and milk.

Kenmore elite clean flow air filter is engineered for tool-free installation and features a lightweight, snap-in design that fits securely into the existing "Fresh Air Filter" wall housing. For optimal deodorizing performance and consistent airflow, it is recommended to replace the filter every six months or when the refrigerator's status indicator light is activated. Need help with the swap? See our step-by-step refrigerator air filter replacement guide.

Why choose the Kenmore air filter 9918?

  • 15x Better Than Baking Soda: Active fan-powered filtration scrubs odors out of the air in minutes.
  • Stops Flavor Transfers: Prevents strong food smells from ruining the taste of milk, butter, and ice.
  • Guaranteed Factory Fit: Snaps perfectly into the wall housing with zero air gaps.
  • Protects the Fan Motor: Engineered with the correct airflow resistance to prevent motor strain.

This filter is also sold as the LG LT120F Fresh Air Filter — the same carbon block, same dimensions, fully interchangeable for LG-branded refrigerators. Browse our full Kenmore Air Filters collection to find filters for other Kenmore models.

Directly compatible with premium Kenmore, Kenmore Elite, and LG French door or side-by-side refrigerators using filter LT120F.

Key Features

  • Advanced Activated Carbon Media: Constructed with a highly porous, thermal-treated activated carbon block that creates a massive internal surface area. This maximize the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and common food-borne gases.
  • Forced-Air System Integration: Specially engineered to work in tandem with the refrigerator's internal circulation fan. Instead of relying on passive air contact (like traditional baking soda boxes), air is mechanically forced through the carbon matrix for rapid, continuous air purification.
  • Precision OEM Specification: Manufactured to exact factory dimensional tolerances (3.2" x 3.2" x 0.25"). This guarantees a seamless fit inside the original housing cover, ensuring a perfect seal so that unfiltered air cannot bypass the perimeter of the media block.
  • Tool-Free Snap-In Mechanical Design: Features a user-friendly, lightweight profile that drops directly into the rear-wall housing. It requires zero tools or modifications, utilizing a quick-turn twist-lock assembly for immediate installation.
  • Optimized Flow Resistance: Calibrated to match the exact static pressure limits of the refrigerator’s internal fan motor. This maintains high cubic feet per minute (CFM) airflow without causing electrical resistance or premature wear on the appliance's air-delivery system.

How It Works

The air filter uses activated carbon technology to continuously circulate and purify the air inside your refrigerator — neutralizing odors from foods like fish, leftovers, and produce before they spread or affect flavor.

  • Activated Carbon Core: Uses a dense carbon matrix to adsorb odor molecules and gases on contact.
  • Continuous Air Circulation: Works with your fridge's fan to pull air through the filter repeatedly, 24/7.
  • Adsorption Technology: Traps contaminants at a molecular level rather than just masking smells.
  • Passive Filtration: Requires no maintenance between replacements—install, and it works automatically.

What Your Air Filter Removes

What This Filter Removes

Our certified filtration system targets and removes a wide range of harmful contaminants and odors.

  • Food Odors: Neutralize strong smells from fish, leftovers, onions, and other pungent foods.
  • Ethylene Gas: Absorbs the natural gas emitted by ripening produce that speeds up spoilage
  • Airborne Bacteria: Captures and reduces bacteria circulating in the air inside your fridge.
  • Mold Spores: Filters out mold spores before they can settle and grow on stored food
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Remove harmful chemical compounds that can affect food quality.
  • Cross-Contamination Particles: Prevents flavor and odor transfer between different food items.

When to Replace Your Refrigerator Air Filter

Person marking calendar in kitchen

Every 6 Months

Activated carbon saturates over time. Replacing every 6 months ensures continuous odor and gas adsorption — even if the filter looks clean.

Fridge control panel

Filter Alert Light

When your fridge's air filter indicator turns red or begins flashing, replace immediately. The sensor tracks usage and airflow performance automatically.

Persistent Fridge Odors

Persistent Fridge Odors

If odors linger inside a clean fridge, your air filter is exhausted. Don't wait for the indicator — trust your nose and replace it promptly.

FAQ

Q: How often do I really need to replace the air filter?
A: Every 6 months. However, if you store a lot of fresh, pungent foods (like fish, onions, or garlic) or use the refrigerator's "Max" or "Power" air mode frequently, you may need to replace it sooner when the control panel indicator lights up.

Q: Is the Kenmore filter 9918 compatible with LG LT120F?
A: Yes. LG manufactures many Kenmore Elite refrigerators. The Kenmore 9918 (or part number 46-9918) and the LG LT120F are identical in physical size, material, and performance, making them 100% interchangeable.

Q: How to replace the Kenmore Elite Clean Flow air filter 9918?
Replacing the filter is a quick, tool-free process. The filter housing is located at the top back center wall of your refrigerator's interior, usually marked with a "Clean Flow" or "Fresh Air Filter" label.

  1. Remove the cover: Firmly grip the outside of the round plastic filter cover on the back wall. Rotate the cover counterclockwise (to the left) roughly a quarter-turn to release the plastic locking tabs, then pull it forward.
  2. Swap out the old filter: Pop the old, used carbon filter out from the back side of the detached cover. Take your fresh Kenmore 9918 filter and place it back into the cover, making sure the side marked "FRONT" faces outward so it is visible to you.
  3. Reinstall the housing: Align the four small tabs on the back of the cover with the mounting slots on the refrigerator wall. Push the cover flat against the wall and rotate it clockwise (to the right) until it clicks firmly back into place.
  4. Reset the status indicator: Locate your refrigerator's digital control panel. Find the Air Filter status button. Press and hold the button down for 3 seconds until the replacement warning light turns off or resets to its original configuration.

Q: Can I just use a box of baking soda instead?
A: Baking soda only filters air that passively drifts past it. The filter is built directly into your refrigerator's forced-air fan system. It actively pulls air through the carbon block, making it up to 15 times more powerful and significantly faster at eliminating stubborn odors.

Q: Which side of the filter faces out when installing it?
A: The filter should be inserted into the plastic cover with the side printed "FRONT" facing out toward you. When you twist the cover back onto the refrigerator wall, that "FRONT" side will face the inside of the fridge.

Q: Why is my "Replace Filter" light still on after installing the new one?
A: The refrigerator cannot automatically detect a new filter. You must manually reset the sensor. Locate the Air Filter button on your refrigerator's control panel, then press and hold it down for 3 seconds until the light turns off or resets.
